Profile ~ Aurelio Jose Barrera

Aurelio Jose Barrera is a documentary photographer from East LA.  Recently he updated his website with a blog that showcases the work of shooters who photograph Latino culture in the U.S.  After working on the book Americanos in 1999 he was inspired to continue creating better balanced and accurate images of his culture. Barrera is always looking for different photographers to write about on his blog.

Shooting the people along Avenida Cesar Chavez is an ongoing project that he started in 2002 to focus on the many aspects of Chicano and Mexican life. Along the 7-mile long street there are businesses, hospitals, schools and homes of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation residents.

In 1984 he was one of the photographers who shot for the Los Angeles Times series on Latinos in Southern California that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Barrera is currently a Photo Editor at the Los Angeles Times.
